Chronologie of an improbable victory

3:26 p.m. ET: After a bogey on the par-4 seventh, McIlroy finds the water on his second on the par-5 eighth. Playing in the group in front of him, Scott makes birdie but it was Watson, who is two groups in front, who charges within one of McIlroy after draining a 61-foot eagle putt from across the green. McIlroy goes on to save par, but the lead has gone from as many as four early in the round to just one as he nears the turn.

4:00 p.m. ET: Just one of two players in the field without a birdie on his card to this point, McIlroy suddenly finds himself in a four-way tie for the lead with Watson and his playing partner Danny Willett as well as Phil Mickelson, who is playing alongside Scott. Willett and Mickelson have each made three birdies and no bogeys on the front nine.

4:02 p.m. ET: Scott, meanwhile, has bounced back from his early struggles with birdies on Nos. 6 and 8 and adds another at the par-5 10th after reaching the green in two. He is suddenly just one off the lead.

4:17 p.m. ET: Scott can’t miss with his irons. He flags a short iron from 170 yards to inside 3 feet on No. 11. Birdie. The Aussie is now tied for the lead, while Mickelson and Willett have dropped a stroke following bogeys on 10 and 11, respectively.

4:26 p.m. ET: Playing the par-5 12th, Bubba Watson sinks another long putt, this time from 27 feet, to get to 11 under and a one-shot lead by himself. It doesn’t last, as Scott ends up making birdie on the hole, too.

5:02 p.m. ET: Two holes later, Watson fails to get up-and-down from the sand behind the green and makes bogey. Scott leads by one and extends the margin to two after sticking his approach on the same hole to 3 feet to set up his third birdie in four holes.

5:26 p.m. ET: The strangest shot of the day occurs when Scott, who had driven through the reachable par-4 16th, shanks his wedge while playing out of the sand. The ball settles in the rough, but he gets up-and-down for par.

5:34 p.m. ET: Watson sticks his approach on 17 to inside 10 feet and makes the birdie putt to get back to 11 under. He’s within one of the lead.

5:36 p.m. ET: McIlroy makes his first -- and only -- birdie of the day, rolling in a 6-footer on the par-4 16th. He is two back with two to play.

5:39 p.m. ET: Also trailing Scott by a stroke at 11 under, Willett hits his tee shot into the water on the par-4 18th. He goes on to make bogey.

5:48 p.m. ET: Scott’s tee shot at 18 lands behind a skinny palm tree just right of the fairway but there is enough room for him to carve a shot toward the green.

5:52 p.m. ET: Watson gets up-and-down for par from behind the green at 18 for a 68. He is the clubhouse leader at 11 under.

5:56 p.m. ET: Scott’s approach lands on the bank left of the green at 18 but stays up, coming to rest just inside the hazard line.

6:04 p.m. ET: Scott chips to 6 feet and makes the par putt to finish at 12 under. Playing behind him, McIlroy has to hole out for eagle from the fairway to force a playoff but he misses the green right. He shoots 74 to finish two back.
